If You Happen By

I’m not home welcome yourself on the mat,
Be careful of the plants they have set to bloom
don’t bruise the delicate nature of their living.
they’ve long waited for their season.

If the door is ajar do not be troubled
Please come in.
Life subsides in the entryway
And if your scarf should drape, hang it carefully.

The midair will make the sweetness
of sorrow in the calm of night.
If your fingertips move across the table and candles
seem to quiver it is only the afterglow
of another day.

If music plays, it may be the sound of slumber
fed by the hum of a Philco radio.
If the flowered chair looks at the window
Do not disturb me, I may be asleep
a daydream stirring.

If you happen by make this your day
a visit for a moment or two,
where your children come to joy, and small
hands love the banister of grainy wood

Where two cups, two spoons, sugar, and cream
sit on the table to allow tomorrow.
