KEEPER OF LIGHT

Apr 23

We arrive on the dock.
The Grand Tour of the Apostle Islands. Much
of the tour depends on the weather and if Lake Michigan
has a good morning.
There are no warnings
yet, but all will scan the sky as good sailors do.
But aboard we feel safe– large two-tier ferry
with indoor and out seating—all steel.
The tour guide gives us details
of the many storms that turned massive ships
into kindling, not just boats but the wooden lighthouse’s
of that day and the wild storms
that tore two into pieces.
In 1938 two wooden lighthouses on Long Island
were destroyed by a great storm
that struck the New England coast. Replacements
are large steel and bell shape beacon
of light at its peak.
There are no new lighthouses being
built the cost exorbitant. Though
there are always some that will be refurbished
with a Fresnel (Frey Nel) glass if it can be found or fabricated
projects for miles.
