leaves haven’t turned jewel,
but there is a purple glow to most
and walnut leaves are mostly
yellow mixed with green
of summer and skim the ponds
and puddles.

in the yard
laundry flaps in the wind
and potted plants ready for winter wear
I feel the earth turn around the moon
out of orbit.

and Autumn has many meanings
mine is musical, writing a song about leaves,
blowing in the wind, the days
of wine and roses
and roasting chestnuts,

soon all will lift away–
one minute they’re there,
then gone like the day of Pompeii,
but maybe the Earth is something
as simple as purple.
