FIRST LIGHT

FIRST LIGHT

When I saw the air fall away,
a glint on a metallic wing,
I saw a cloud float in the sky,
pulsing away.

I saw the sea move in penumbra colors,
rise and fall with the wind.

I saw the waves swell and drop,
roll in and out in a blue tune,
laughing beneath feathery clouds.

The sun—a glint caught
on a metallic wing.
First clouds, scoops
of colorless powder.
Penumbra softened by the elegance
of light
that gently rises
in those shades
of blue—
oh, that blue
that watches the horizon
change from feathery clouds
to peacock preen.
